The Indian Institute of Diabetes (IID) was established in 2001 based on the memorandum of understanding between government of Kerala and World India Diabetes Foundation, USA. WIDF is promoted by eminent physicians in the USA. Major proposed activities of this joint venture as envisaged at the time of establishing Indian Institute were to Investigate the genetic basis of diabetes among Indians, train Indian physicians and paramedical staff in centers of excellence in USA, provide research support to develop novel methods of treatment, Endow academic chairs in diabetes, organize state-of-the-art conferences in India on various aspects in diabetes.Over the years the Indian Institute of Diabetes has become a major institution in diabetes care in Kerala and the institute is the state nodal centre for the National Programmed for the Prevention and Control of diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and stroke. The Kerala Heart foundation has recently been amalgamated into the IID.The thrust areas of the institute are Clinical Care, sub specialty services, epidemiological studies of non communicable diseases, community, school and workplace based public health interventions and health awareness generation This autonomous institution runs on generous grant from the Government of Kerala. Directed by former Director of medical education and assisted by internationally and nationally trained senior faculties.
